General Practitioner
Dr N Ashtiker
Qualifications
Medicine is more than diagnosing and treating illness. It is about being present during uncertain moments, offering reassurance when it is needed most, and building long-term relationships that support better health over time.
For Dr N Ashtiker, a GP in Cape Town, this balance between urgent care and ongoing patient support is what continues to shape a fulfilling and evolving medical career. He was drawn to medicine because of the combination of clinical problem-solving and the ability to make a meaningful impact on people's lives. Over time, he found himself gravitating toward both emergency medicine and general practice, as they offer very different but complementary forms of fulfilment.
Dr Ashtiker holds an MBChB degree from Stellenbosch University and is certified in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Additional qualifications include a dispensing licence and a Certificate in Travel Medicine from Wits University. These areas of training support a broad scope of care, from acute medical situations to preventative healthcare and chronic disease management.
A strong interest in both emergency medicine and general practice has influenced the way Dr Ashtiker approaches patient care. Emergency medicine offers the challenge of rapid clinical decision-making in high-pressure situations where timely intervention can make a significant difference. General practice, on the other hand, provides the opportunity to follow patients through different stages of life, manage ongoing health concerns, and build trusted relationships through continuity of care.
Travel medicine in Cape Town has also become an important area of focus. With a personal passion for travel, Dr Ashtiker enjoys helping patients prepare for international trips through preventative advice, vaccinations, and destination-specific health guidance. This interest continues to shape his vision of creating a travel clinic within the practice, offering patients a more proactive and comprehensive healthcare experience.
Outside of medicine, Dr Ashtiker maintains an active lifestyle. Running races, gym training, and hiking all form part of life beyond the practice and contribute to resilience within a demanding profession. He also has a keen interest in Formula One and ongoing professional development through attending medical expos and healthcare conferences both locally and beyond. Staying informed about developments in medicine allows patients to benefit from current, evidence-based approaches to care.
